The deeper answer
What changes the decision.
Start with the house, not the brochure. On a straightforward ranch or split-level, modern premium vinyl can deliver a clean exterior, through-color scratch resistance, no painting, and a strong limited warranty without spending Hardie money. When the wall has elaborate openings, wide trim, or a historic profile, HardiePlank's crisp shadow line and stable board geometry become easier to justify.
The hidden wall work is identical either way. Both systems need full tear-off, sound sheathing, a correctly lapped water-resistant barrier, and flashing that moves water out over the face of the WRB. Buying a premium board does not rescue a bad wall assembly. Installation quality is the multiplier on material life.
Price is not just the board. Hardie is heavier, slower to cut and fasten, and more demanding at clearances, butt joints, and penetrations. That labor is a big part of why it costs more installed. Compare written scopes, not material names alone. Ask which product line, which finish, which trim, and which installation detail is included.
Choose vinyl when low maintenance and value lead the decision. Choose Hardie when architecture, fire resistance, insects, finish quality, and a long ownership horizon matter more. We bring both samples to the house so you can judge them against the roof, brick, windows, and natural light.
