Siding Warranties Explained: Product vs. Workmanship
South Jersey Construction Consultants Inc. — reviewed October 2026
A siding job actually carries three separate warranties, and the one that protects you most is usually the shortest. The product warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers defects in the siding itself. The finish warranty covers the color coating on factory-finished products. The workmanship warranty comes from your contractor and covers how the job was installed — and since most siding failures are installation failures, that’s the layer to read twice. Here’s how each one works and what can quietly void them.
What does each warranty layer cover?
Product warranty. Covers manufacturing defects — panels that crack, delaminate or fail under normal use. Terms, proration (how coverage shrinks over time) and labor coverage vary widely by brand and product line VERIFY: manufacturer warranty documents.
Finish warranty. On factory-finished products like James Hardie ColorPlus, the coating carries its own warranty with its own term and conditions VERIFY: James Hardie ColorPlus warranty, current rev. Field-painted siding has no factory finish warranty — the paint’s own product warranty applies instead.
Workmanship warranty. This is the contractor’s promise to stand behind the installation — the nailing, the flashing, the wrap. Our written workmanship term is stated in every contract and closeout letter VERIFY: SJCC workmanship warranty letter. Get any contractor’s term in writing; a handshake warranty expires when the truck leaves. Registration matters too: many product warranties must be registered within a set window after installation, and we handle that paperwork for you VERIFY: manufacturer warranty documents.
What voids a siding warranty?
The big one is improper installation. Manufacturers publish written installation instructions — nail placement, gaps, clearances above roofs and grade — and a warranty claim can be denied if the job didn’t follow them VERIFY: manufacturer warranty documents. That’s why we photograph every wall at every stage: if a claim ever comes, we can show the job was built to the book.
Other common voids: unsealed field-cut edges on fiber cement and engineered wood, painting a product that isn’t meant to be painted, pressure-washing damage, and unapproved alterations or repairs by another contractor VERIFY: manufacturer warranty documents.

Frequently asked questions
Does a “lifetime” siding warranty really mean lifetime?
It means whatever the written document says — and those vary. Many define “lifetime” as the time you own the home, prorate coverage as years pass, and cover the product only, not labor VERIFY: manufacturer warranty documents. Read the terms for your exact product.
Are siding warranties transferable if I sell?
Many allow one transfer, sometimes with reduced terms and a registration deadline; others don’t transfer at all VERIFY: manufacturer warranty documents. Keep your paperwork for closing.
Who do I call first if something goes wrong?
Call the installer first. Most early problems are installation issues covered by the workmanship warranty. If the product itself is defective, your installer should help you document and file the manufacturer claim.
